Feb 22, 2024 / Vienna / European Security and Defence

To mark the second anniversary of the start of the Russian war against Ukraine, the Political Academy of the Austrian People's Party and the Wilfried Martens Centre, in cooperation with the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), organised a discussion at the Palais Epstein. Franz-Stephan Gady, independent defence expert and AIES Senior Advisor, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Mueller, expert on Eastern Europe and historian at the University of Vienna, and Ulf Michael Steindl, AIES Research Fellow, spoke as experts. Evelyn Peternel, journalist at Kurier, moderated the discussion. Lukas Mandl, Member of the European Parliament, and Bettina Rausch, Member of the National Council, gave keynote speeches.

The focus was on both a review of two years of war and an analysis of the current situation with an outlook on the coming year of war. The three experts discussed the burdens and demands of the war of attrition on the front, the urgent need for sustainable support for Ukraine, the reaction of the West and the importance of sanctions, as well as broader issues relating to Europe's role in a more unstable world.
