AIES Profile

Research & Consulting

Founded in 1996, the Austria Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) is an independent and non-profit research institute that has been providing expertise and recommendations on security, defense and foreign policy issues to public stakeholders for more than 25 years.

The focus of our analytical activities is on European integration, EU neighborhood policy, the Common Security and Defense Policy and its interaction with NATO, security policy developments in the Indo-Pacific region and the global challenges of the 21st century.

The AIES not only conducts research on these topics, but also prepares needs-oriented analyses and recommendations for contract partners and organizes internal expert workshops and public events. In the course of this interdisciplinary work, the AIES team of experts makes use of an active network of university, political, economic and social science partner institutions, civil society institutions, the media and international organizations.

Methods & Communication

The AIES team of experts uses various methods and approaches to carry out our research activities in a qualified manner. These include the processing of publicly accessible primary sources on European and security policy, scientific exchange with institutes and universities at national and international level through symposia, workshops and specialist conferences, as well as cooperation with state institutions. In addition, the Institute acts as an Austrian partner in several international research networks and produces well-founded analyses, scientific studies and policy recommendations.

The AIES publishes scientific publications in various digital formats: as AIES Studies, in the publication series AIES Focus and AIES Commentary, but also in external formats.

The Institute also makes the specialist expertise of its experts available to the public by responding to media inquiries.
