Japan, Europe and the Rule of Law in the Indo-Pacific

Expert Workshop in Vienna

On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, the Austria Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) together with the Japanese Embassy in Austria organized an expert workshop titled “Rule of Law in the Indo-Pacific: How can Japan and Europe contribute to the international order and benefit from each other?”.

After welcoming remarks by AIES President Dr. Werner Fasslabend and Ambassador Ryuta Mizuuchi, the main speaker Dr. Yoshinobu Takei, Associate Professor within the Faculty of Law at the Keio University, talked about the efforts to promote international law, challenges for the Indo-Pacific region, and the direction of future cooperation within the international community. 

After Dr. Takei’s presentation, a panel discussion featuring Dr. Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik, Professor Emeritus of Sinology, University of Vienna and Dr. Alfred Gerstl, Associate Professor Palacky, University Olomouc (Department of Asian Studies), AIES Senior Advisor outlined the importance of international law and the challenges to international peace and security in the Indo-Pacific. Thereby, relevant suggestions on intensifying the mutually beneficial cooperation between Japan and the European Union on safeguarding international law were highlighted.
