In the shadow of the war against Ukraine

Oct 23, 2023 / Vienna / European Security and Defence

On October 23, 2023, the Austria Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) hosted a group of German civic education teachers from Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony. This trip took place under the leadership of the Youth Officers Potsdam.

AIES Research Fellow Ulf Steindl gave a lecture for the group on the European security architecture, with a focus on the evolving cooperation and complementarity between the EU and NATO. The focus was on the one hand on the historical development of the relationship since the 1990s, on the other hand on the conceptualization of the cooperation since the 1st Joint Declaration in 2016 and an outlook on thematic areas for future cooperation. The lecture was complemented by an intensive discussion with the participants. The security and defense situation in Europe and the immediate neighborhood was discussed, as well as the situation in the Indo-Pacific around Taiwan.
