On Thursday, February 9, 2023, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) organised a closed-door expert workshop and a public panel discussion with Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Bagci on the topic "Turkey as a regional power". During the workshop, participants had the possibility to discuss a number of topics of Turkish foreign and security policy from Central Asia to Libya and Russia. In addition, the relationship between Turkey and the U.S. was addressed, as well as Turkey's role as a mediator in the Ukraine war.
Later, at the panel discussion held at the Vienna School of International Studies, a panel consisting of Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Bagci, Ambassador Dr. Klaus Wölfer and Ambassador Dr. Martin Sajdik further discussed the role of Turkey as a regional power. The welcome message was given by Ambassador Emil Brix, the event was moderated by Dr. Werner Fasslabend.
The two presentations were followed by a discussion with questions from the audience regarding Turkey's relations with Syria, Cyprus and Armenia. Additionally, the relations between the EU and Turkey were discussed as well as the outcome of the upcoming presidential elections in Turkey.
