Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has proposed peace initiatives for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including a ceasefire, demilitarized zones, and UN peacekeeping deployment. However, his approach faced criticism, with Ukraine and experts questioning its feasibility and impartiality. Despite this, Subianto’s proposal has highlighted Indonesia’s potential as a mediator, given its successful history in conflict resolution. Reviving Indonesia’s informal diplomatic approach, the JIM model, could offer a unique framework for shuttle diplomacy, enabling flexible, low-precondition dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow. With Indonesia’s strategic global aspirations, its mediation role could foster a renewed platform for peace talks.
