War with all its horrors has returned to the European continent. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the geopolitical options for security, foreign, and economic policy and strategic decisions. Building on the description of the geopolitical situation, which has been turned upside down by Russia's war against Ukraine, it examines aspects of European defence policy and its strategic orientation, as well as the role of NATO in it. Furthermore, the war in Ukraine is examined in the context of the Transnistrian conflict. With regard to economic and monetary policy, the effect of sanctions against Russia and the power of central banks in times of war are explored.
Overall, the book demonstrates that geopolitics must be based on a clear vision of a desired state, an assessment of the environment and an honest analysis of one’s own capabilities and means. The (geo)political decision must explore all legal boundaries to put aggressors permanently in their place.
The AIES team consisting of Velina Tchakarova, Michael Zinkanell, Livia Benko, Christoph Schwarz and Ulf Steindl have contributed to this volume and presented their expertise in the first chapter “The Year Ahead and Beyond”.
Der Krieg mit all seinen Schrecken ist auf den europäischen Kontinent zurückgekehrt. Dieser Sammelband bietet eine umfassende Analyse geopolitischer Optionen für Sicherheits-, Außen- und Wirtschaftspolitik sowie für strategische Entscheidungen. Aufbauend auf der Beschreibung der geopolitischen Lage, welche durch Russlands Krieg gegen die Ukraine fundamental beeinflusst wurde, werden insbesondere Aspekte aus dem Bereich der europäischen Verteidigungspolitik und deren strategische Ausrichtung sowie die Rolle der NATO untersucht. Zudem wird der Krieg in der Ukraine im Zusammenhang mit dem Transnistrien-Konflikt beleuchtet. In Bezug auf die Relevanz von Wirtschafts- und Währungspolitik wird der Effekt der Sanktionen gegen Russland beleuchtet sowie die Macht von Zentralbanken zu Kriegszeiten untersucht.
Insgesamt wird verdeutlicht, dass Geopolitik auf einer klaren Vision eines gewünschten Zustands, einer strategischen Einschätzung des Umfelds und einer nüchternen Analyse der eigenen Fähigkeiten und Mittel basieren muss. Die (geo-)politischen Entscheidungen müssen alle rechtlichen Grenzen ausloten, um Aggressoren dauerhaft in die Schranken zu weisen.
