Ukraine’s Defiance
Between Ceasefire and Victory
AIES Comment 2025/1

Ukraine’s struggle against Russia underscores a disconnect between its priorities and the West’s approach. While Ukraine seeks victory and robust security guarantees, Western debates focus on ceasefires, war fatigue, and conscription, often ignoring the risks of premature negotiations. A ceasefire would enable Russia to rearm, prolonging the conflict. Technological superiority, not troop numbers, is key to Ukraine’s success. NATO membership remains Ukraine’s best security guarantee, but coalitions of the willing determinately supporting Ukraine can fill the gap. Western inaction risks geopolitical catastrophe, highlighting the need for decisive, timely support to ensure Ukraine’s victory, safeguard European security, and uphold global stability and international law.
