A Deep Dive into the US Presidential Elections

03.09.24 / Remote

On 3 September 2024, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), in collaboration with the Young Transatlantic Initiative, the Young Atlantic Treaty Association (YATA) Austria, and the US Embassy in Vienna, hosted the second session of the Transatlantic Talks series. The virtual discussion, moderated by David Kirsch, explored the implications of the upcoming US presidential elections on transatlantic relations. The expert panel included Elmar Theveßen (Washington Bureau Chief for ZDF), Julius van de Laar (political consultant), Knut Dethlefsen (project director at the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Brussels), Sergey Lagodinsky (Member of the European Parliament, Greens/EFA), and US election analyst Paul Aigner.

Key insights were shared on the dynamics of Kamala Harris’s campaign following Joe Biden's resignation, the impact of her running mate Tim Walz, and the election’s potential consequences for US-European relations. The panel highlighted the significance of swing states and key demographics, including Black voters and suburban women, as well as concerns about possible unrest following a close election.
