Ceasefire in Ukraine
Scenarios for European security
Mar 10, 2025 / Vienna
On 10 March 2025, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), in cooperation with the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna (DA), organized an event on the current situation in the war in Ukraine and possible scenarios for a ceasefire. In this context, the role of Austria and the EU in a future security architecture in Europe was also discussed.
The event began with an introduction by Dr. Werner Fasslabend, President of the AIES, in which he described the shifting geopolitical dynamics and Europe's role in the emerging geopolitical constellation. This was followed by a presentation by Brigadier Ronald Vartok on the current situation in the war against Ukraine and the impact of the war on the EU and Austria. He also addressed the changes in the European security architecture against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's second term in office. Martin Sajdik, a top Austrian diplomat and former OSCE Special Envoy for Ukraine, then discussed the conditions and scenarios for a ceasefire in Ukraine. He drew on his many years of experience as a negotiator of numerous ceasefires in Ukraine within the framework of the Minsk Agreements.
The event ended with a Q&A session in which the audience once again asked the experts on the panel with interest about possible scenarios for the war against Ukraine and the future of Europe's security policy.
