Syria at the Crossroads

A travel report

Mar 04, 2025 / Vienna / EU Neighbourhood

On the 4th of March 2025, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), in cooperation with the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC) and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, hosted the event "Syria at the Crossroads". The discussion featured Mag. Louai Kuzbari, Arab President of the AACC, and Dipl.-Ing. Mouddar Khouja, Secretary General of the AACC, who shared their insights from a recent visit to Syria, covering Damascus, Aleppo, and Idlib.

The speakers provided firsthand accounts of Syria’s current political, economic, and social landscape. They emphasized the destruction left by years of conflict, particularly in Aleppo, where infrastructure and housing have been severely impacted. Despite these challenges, the speakers noted a growing determination among Syrians to rebuild their country, with many advocating for new political structures and economic reintegration. Meetings with the Chamber of Commerce in Damascus highlighted the need for legal frameworks to attract investment and facilitate Syria’s return to the global economy.

Idlib presented a stark contrast, with more developed infrastructure, consistent electricity, and economic activity. Discussions also touched on the concept of federalism, drawing parallels to Austria’s system, as some Syrian regions seek greater autonomy in governance. The urgent need for humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts was underscored, with a call for international support to deliver tangible progress for the Syrian people.

The event concluded with an engaging discussion on the role of the international community in Syria’s recovery. Participants examined the complexities of lifting sanctions, fostering economic stability, and ensuring justice for those affected by the conflict. The insights shared provided a nuanced perspective on Syria’s challenges and potential paths forward.
