From October 2 to 4, 2024, AIES Research Fellow Ulf Steindl participated in the "VIII Youth Mediterranean Dialogue" seminar held in Madrid, Spain. This event was organized by YATA Spain and received support from the Armada Española, reflecting the importance of fostering cooperation and dialogue among young professionals and experts in maritime security. Throughout the seminar, participants were engaged in a variety of interactive and informative activities. These included attending a conference at the Spanish Navy Headquarters and taking part in workshops hosted at the Spanish Naval War College, which deepened their understanding of modern naval challenges.
One of the seminar's highlights was a dynamic wargaming session conducted at the Centre for Higher National Defence Studies (CESEDEN), where participants simulated real-world scenarios and applied strategic decision-making skills to address complex maritime security issues. Additionally, the group visited the Spanish Operations Command (MOPS), gaining insight into Spain’s operational capabilities and its role in safeguarding maritime interests.
The seminar focused on critical topics that are of increasing concern in the Mediterranean and Red Sea regions, particularly the growing hybrid threats, piracy, cybersecurity, and the emerging challenges posed by non-state actors in maritime contexts. These discussions and activities underscored the necessity of international cooperation to ensure stability and security in these strategic waterways, which are pivotal for global trade and regional security. The seminar offered a platform for young leaders to exchange ideas and contribute to ongoing efforts to tackle these pressing security challenges.
