On 2 April 2025, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) hosted together with the Institute for Middle East Studies (VIIMES) a high-level expert workshop on Egypt’s foreign policy and regional dynamics. The keynote address was delivered by the former Egyptian Foreign Minister H.E. Ambassador Mohamed El-Orabi and moderated by Dr. Werner Fasslabend, President of AIES. The event brought together ambassadors, diplomats, and experts from various countries, reflecting its significance and regional relevance.
In his remarks, H.E. Ambassador Mohamed El-Orabi outlined Egypt’s foreign policy priorities, highlighting the pursuit of peace, stability, development, and prosperity as guiding principles. He emphasised Egypt’s role as a key stabilising actor in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in confronting transnational challenges such as terrorism, irregular migration, climate change, and pandemics. The importance of dialogue and multilateral cooperation in addressing these issues was stressed throughout the discussion.
The workshop also addressed a number of current regional and international crises. Particular attention was given to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Middle East peace process, and the broader implications for regional security. The speaker stressed the urgent need for a just and lasting resolution and pointed to the limitations of international institutions in effectively managing long-standing conflicts.
An Q&A session followed the keynote speech, allowing for a broad exchange on key geopolitical developments, including security in the Red Sea, shifting regional alliances, energy geopolitics, and the influence of external powers. The discussion provided insight into Egypt’s diplomatic outlook and its commitment to promoting a cooperative and rules-based international order.
