Europe's security architecture in a phase of geopolitical upheaval
Visit of the Bundeswehr to the AIES
Jul 22, 2025 / Vienna / European Security and Defence / Austrian Foreign, Security, Defence Policy
On July 22 and 23, 2025, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) welcomed a study group from the Bundeswehr's Rapid Forces Division. AIES Research Fellow Ulf Steindl kicked off the event with an analysis of the European security architecture. He shed light on the historical development of the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy, the cooperation between the EU and NATO and outlined several scenarios for the future of common European defence. Research Fellow Christoph Schwarz then explained Austrian neutrality - its historical development, conceptual classification and its relationship to the EU's CSDP and Article 42 (7) TEU, as well as the resulting areas of tension in national and international politics. The subsequent exchange focused on Germany's turning point, the 2032+ development plan for the Austrian Armed Forces and questions of European solidarity and burden-sharing.
