Europe's Security Architecture and Austria'S Neutrality

Visit by the Federal University of Applied Administrative Sciences

Oct 07, 2024 / Vienna / European Security and Defence / Austrian Foreign, Security, Defence Policy

On October 7, 2024, a group from the Federal University of Applied Administrative Sciences in Brühl, Germany, visited Vienna as part of a study trip. The students from the Master of Public Administration, employees of the German federal administration on their way to the higher administrative service, were hosted by the AIES Research Fellows Ulf Steindl and Christoph Schwarz.

Ulf Steindl gave a presentation on the European security architecture after 2022, with a particular focus on the evolving complementarity between the EU and NATO. The focus was twofold: first, on the historical development of the relationship since the 1990s, and second, on the conceptual framework of the cooperation following the 1st Joint Declaration in 2016, along with a look ahead to potential areas for future collaboration. This was followed by a lecture from Christoph Schwarz, who discussed Austria's neutrality, its evolution during the Second Republic and its role within the European Union. The event provided a comprehensive overview of key security issues in Europe and Austria’s unique position within.
