Comprehensive Security in the Age of Complex Threats
A workshop on the Scandinavian perspective on the current European security situation
Jun 11, 2025 / Vienna / European Security and Defence / Global Affairs
The war in Ukraine has prompted European countries to reconsider their security concepts. Finland and Sweden — two countries that joined NATO in response to the threat posed by Russia — have developed comprehensive and forward-looking security strategies in this context.
To advance this discussion and the exchange of ideas on comprehensive security, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), in cooperation with the Swedish and Finnish embassies, hosted a closed-door workshop on June 11 under the title Comprehensive Security in the Age of Complex Threats, focusing on the perspectives of both Scandinavian countries as well as Austria.
Guest speakers included Peter Vorhofer, Government Advisor for Crisis Preparedness, Crisis Management, Comprehensive National Defence, National Security, and State Resilience; Kari Pelkonen, Senior Specialist at the Secretariat of the Finnish Security Committee; and Jonas Hard af Segerstad, Swedish Defence Attaché in Vienna, Berlin, and Bern.
The event was moderated by AIES Director Michael Zinkanell.
