Cold War 2.0 (?): The Transformation in the International System

On 26 November 2025, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) welcomed a unit of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) to Vienna as part of a political education visit. The trip was organised by the Bildungswerk des Deutschen Bundeswehrverbandes.
AIES Research Fellow Ulf Steindl delivered a lecture to the group on “Cold War 2.0 (?): The Transformation of the International System and Russia’s War against Ukraine”. The talk addressed theories of the international system, great-power politics, concepts of a “new world order”, current conflicts and growing geopolitical competition.
The visit concluded with a discussion on the significance and role of Europe and the European Union in this changing international environment.
