Sep 18, 2024 / Vienna / Indo-Pacific / Global Affairs

The Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), in cooperation with the Vienna School of International Studies (DA), hosted the event “Perspectives on Chinese Foreign Policy” on September 18, 2024.

Prof. Dr. Weigelin-Schwiedrzik (University of Vienna) was invited to speak. She gave a detailed assessment of Chinese foreign policy, with a special focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Prof. Dr. Weigelin-Schwiedrzik outlined China's foreign policy strategy - to pursue a slow change in the global geopolitical power structure and to use the increasing cooperation with Russia in the Ukraine conflict as a means to challenge the US. She also explained the role of other international political actors such as India and Europe in this context and emphasized the importance of Europe for China's foreign policy strategy.

AIES Research Fellow Nick Nieschalke and AIES Research Associate Adam Urosevic also presented the “China Dashboard”, a research tool that enables a multi-layered analysis and research of the statements of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The event was moderated by Dr. Fasslabend (AIES President), who concluded by summarizing the most important findings from the presentation and also gave guests the opportunity to ask the speaker questions.
