The Evolution of China's Industrial Policy Discourse from 1979 to 2023
Lecture by AIES Research Associate Lucas Erlbacher
Apr 30, 2024 / Vienna / Indo-Pacific
AIES Research Associate Lucas Erlbacher was invited to give a lecture at the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies on 30 April 2024. The focus was on the discourse on industrial policy in China and its development since 1979.
Since the mid-2000s, Chinese industrial policy has become a central component of Chinese economic policy and an important topic of economic discussion. This change has led to a resurgence of industrial policy in developing countries due to competitive pressure from Chinese industrial groups. During the seminar, Lucas presented his research on the Chinese economic debates on industrial policy reform, in particular the mid-2010 consensus on moving towards a more functional and horizontal approach.
