Korea: A new History of South and North
A book presentation by Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo
May 12, 2025 / Vienna / Global Affairs
From 12 to 13 May 2025, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), in cooperation with the Vienna School of International Studies (DA), hosted an engaging two-day event featuring Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo, who presented their book “Korea: A New History of South and North.”
The authors offered a fresh, analytical account of why and how the two Koreas have developed so differently, framing the peninsula’s history through colonialism, war, division, and political leadership, with perspectives from both Europe and the United States.
Discussions highlighted the enduring impact of external powers on Korea’s fate, the pivotal role of domestic leadership, and the striking divergence between the democratic South and authoritarian North.
The conversation also touched on Korea’s growing role in global security, including indirect involvement in the war in Ukraine and shifting geopolitical alignments. The event offered a rare, multidimensional view of Korea—bridging history, security, economics, and society—while encouraging critical reflection on the peninsula’s future in a rapidly changing world.
