Comparative Perspectives from Georgia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania, Ukraine and Russia

In light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and its broader regional implications, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), in cooperation with the Austrian Ministry of Defense, hosted a closed-door expert workshop on June 18, focusing on recent developments in the Black Sea region.
The panel explored the multifaceted impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on regional dynamics, providing in-depth, country-specific perspectives on Georgia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania, Ukraine, and Russia. Particular attention was given to the geopolitical shifts resulting from the conflict and the evolving security challenges across the region.
In addition to evaluating potential scenarios for the conclusion of the war, the speakers offered concrete recommendations on how the European Union could more effectively support regional stability and respond to emerging challenges in the Black Sea area.
The workshop featured contributions from Huercan Asli Aksoy, Head of the Center for Applied Turkey Studies at the German Institute for International and Securities Affairs, Sergiy Gerasymchuk, Regional Initiatives and Neighborhood Programme Director at Ukranian PRISM- Foreign Policy Coucil, Nadia Seskuria, Founder and Executive Director of the Regional Institute for Security Studies, Johannes Leitner, Managing Partner at Political Risk and Strategy Advisory, and Sophia Beiter, Research Associate at the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe.
