An Australian Perspective
Mar 24, 2025 / Vienna School of International Studies / Indo-Pacific

On 10 March 2025, the Austrian Institute for European and Security Studies (AIES) in cooperation with the Vienna School of International Studies (DA) and the Australian Embassy hosted an event on the Australian perspective on current and future geostrategic dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
The event was introduced by an in-depth presentation by the Australian expert on Indo-Pacific security policy, Professor Rory Medcalf (Am Head of the National Security College , Australian National University).
In his presentation, he introduced the geostrategic relevance of the Indo-Pacific for international security and discussed this against the background of current developments in international politics. Following he gave an insight into the latest developments in Australian defence policy and drew parallels with current defence policy discussions in European countries.
The event ended with a Q&A session in which the audience once again asked with interest about Professor Medcalf's assessments of power dynamics in the Indo-Pacific, the influence of US President Trump's second term on the Indo-Pacific and the latest plans in Australian defence policy.
