Dec 04, 2024 / Brussels/Mons / European Security and Defence

From December 3 to 5, 2024, Dr. Werner Fasslabend, President of AIES, and Ulf Steindl, AIES Research Fellow, participated in the 70th General Assembly of the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA) held in Brussels, Belgium. This milestone event encompassed both a visit to and briefing at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) and a major conference at the NATO HQ in Brussels, titled "1949-2024: 75 Years of NATO: The Success of an Alliance. What’s Next?".

The main event at NATO Headquarters included discussions focused on transatlantic security and NATO’s future priorities. Key topics included strategies to address current geopolitical tensions, the implications of hybrid and cyber threats, and the importance of partnerships in fostering global stability. Participants engaged in dialogues exploring NATO's achievements over the past 75 years and the strategic path forward. This assembly served as a vital platform for fostering dialogue, exchanging ideas, and strengthening international collaboration to ensure the continued success of NATO in a rapidly changing global environment.

The Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA) is an international federation of 37 national chapters, nongovernmental national councils, committees, or associations that have conducted research, analysis, training, education, and information activities on foreign policy, security, and defense issues related to the Atlantic Alliance since 1954. As the Euro-Atlantic Association Austria, the Austria Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) represents the Austrian chapter in the organization, which also includes partner countries of the NATO Partnership for Peace.
