During the period from 2 to 6 March 2026, the AIES participated in the meetings of the Group of Governmental Experts on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (GGE on LAWS), held in Geneva, Switzerland, under the framework of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW).
Nourhan Mostafa, Research Associate at AIES and Founder and Executive Director of the International Humanitarian Law and Youth Initiative (IHLYI), took part in the discussions, addressing key legal, ethical, and technical issues related to the development and regulation of autonomous weapon systems.
The meetings brought together states, experts, and civil society actors to advance deliberations on a potential international framework governing autonomous weapons systems. Key themes included meaningful human control, accountability, and the challenges of translating international humanitarian law into practical rules capable of addressing rapidly evolving technologies.
In addition to contributing to formal discussions, the participation facilitated engagement and exchange with international delegations and experts working in the fields of disarmament and emerging technologies.
The engagement reflects AIES’s ongoing commitment to supporting inclusive and forward-looking dialogue on international security, as well as enriching global policy discussions on artificial intelligence and armed conflict through diverse perspectives.
