Leopold Schmertzing

Leopold Schmertzing is a security and defence policy analyst and expert in strategic foresight. Until November 2024, he worked as programme director of the European Forum Alpbach, having previously spent seven years at the European Parliament as a political and scientific advisor. Prior to that, he worked at the OSCE, the Austrian Foreign and Defence Ministries, and various think tanks. Leopold studied political science and history at the University of Vienna and strategic studies and international economics at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. He recently submitted his dissertation on the ‘Foresight Policy Gap’ to the University of Vienna.
