Following a comprehensive approach concerning the analysis of European and security policy, the AIES' research is focussing on the following areas:

  • The development of the European Union, EU policies and the European integration process,
  • the Common Foreign and Security Policy(CFSP) as well as the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) of the EU,
  • developments in Central, South-eastern and Eastern Europe,
  • Euro-Mediterranean relations,
  • Transatlantic relations,
  • the EU's relations with Asia, Africa and Latin America,
  • the development of regional and international governance and security structures,
  • Austria's foreign, European and security policy.

In addition to their academic research, the expert team of the AIES provides praxis-oriented analyses and references on the aforementioned topics at both the national and supranational levels. Their interdisciplinary work is supplemented through collaboration with academic, political, economic, social and military institutions, civil organisations and the media as well as through international institutions. All research results are elaborated on and communicated  using different methods and forums.
