Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop
AIES Associate Fellow
Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop (*1976) completed his degree in political sciences/public administration at Ghent University (Belgium) by winning the best thesis award for his work on European security and defence policy. He then gained the Paul-Henri Spaak PhD scholarship of the Fund for Scientific Research – Flanders, which he held from 1999 to 2002, when he defended his dissertation, published as Euro-Mediterranean Security: A Search for Partnership (Ashgate, 2003).
Sven Biscop is Director of the Europe in the World Programme at Egmont – the Royal Institute for International Relations, the think tank associated with Belgian Foreign Affairs which he joined in 2002, originally as a senior research fellow. His research focuses on the foreign, security and defence policy of the European Union.
He is a Visiting Professor for European security at the College of Europe in Bruges (since 2007) and at Ghent University (since 2003). He is a Senior Research Associate of the Centre for European Studies at the Renmin University of China (CESRUC) in Beijing (since 2010) and an Associate Fellow of the Austria Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) in Baden-bei-Wien (since 2011).
On behalf of Egmont, he is co-director of the Higher Studies in Security and Defence, a course for security practitioners organized in collaboration with the Belgian Royal High Institute for Defence, and sits on the Executive Academic Board of the EU’s European Security and Defence College (ESDC).
He is a member of the Scientific Councils of the Flemish Peace Institute (Brussels) and of the Institut d’Etudes Stratégiques de l’Ecole Militaire (IRSEM, Paris), of the Strategic Advisors Group of the Atlantic Council (Washington), and of The Next Generation Advisory Panel to SACEUR/USEUCOM (Brussels/Stuttgart).
He is editor in chief of Egmont’s journal Studia Diplomatica and of its Egmont Papers; member of the board of the Flemish United Nations Association; foreign languages book review editor of the journal European Foreign Affairs Review; and member of the editorial board of the journals Internationale Spectator (Clingendael Institute, The Hague) and European Security.
His recent research and publications have focussed inter alia on the European Security Strategy, on which he has published The European Security Strategy – A Global Agenda for Positive Power (Ashgate, 2005) and The EU and the European Security Strategy – Forging a Global Europe (Routledge, 2008, co-edited with Jan Joel Andersson). Currently he is co-editing The Routledge Handbook of European Security (with Richard Whitman, forthcoming).

13. Europaforum: Der Vertrag von Lissabon
Am 4. Dezember 2009 veranstaltete das Austria Institut für Europa- und Sicherheitspolitik (AIES) das 13. Europaforum zum Thema "Europas Rolle und Sicherheit mit dem Vertrag von Lissabon" im Festsaal der Diplomatischen Akademie in Wien. Bereits drei Tage nach dem Inkrafttreten des Vertrages konnte somit eine umfassende Bestandsaufnahme mit hochrangigen Experten diskutiert werden.
